SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand is one of the renowned
institutions for Dairy Education and Research in the country, established in 1961.
The college periodically organizes seminars, workshops, refresher courses, etc. to
cater the needs of the dairy industry. The Dairy Industry uses considerable amount
of energy in processing of milk and manufacture of different dairy products. Cooling
of milk, pasteurization, condensing, drying, manufacture of indigenous dairy
products, cleaning and sterilization are all energy intensive operations. The
limitations of availability of non-renewable energy sources and increasing cost of
this energy have necessitated critical evaluation of energy requirements for various
unit operations in milk processing plants. Simultaneous saving in the energy can serve
as the carbon trading of greenhouse gas emissions. It is still-to-be-created
international market and is an essential process in the world effort to combat unwanted
climate change. With an objective of providing a platform for fruitful deliberations
on these issues, a Golden Jubilee launching National Seminar on 'Energy Management and
Carbon Trading in Dairy Industry' is organized on June 5-6, 2010. As the college is
celebrating its Golden Jubilee year during the period June 2010, to May 2011, along
with the Swarnim Gujarat celebration during May, 2010 to April, 2011 for completing
50 years of Gujarat state. The seminar will facilitate exchange of information and
discussions on 'Energy uses and management in dairy plant', 'carbon trading in dairy
industries', 'Energy conservations measures' and the like. This is going to be an
excellent platform for the professionals, planners, technocrats, consultants and
academicians to share their views and gather new information.
You are cordially invited to this Seminar. The College is located in a serene and green environment of Anand Agricultural University, which is 5 km away from Anand railway station. Anand is 65 kms south of Ahmedabad and 35 kms north of Vadodara Airports.

"Functional Fermented Dairy Products With Synbiotics"
The modern lifestyle alongwith enhanced consumer awareness about foods has changed the market dynamics in recent times. In pursuit to find better foods, the concepts of probiotics (live microbial food supplement that enhances host health), prebiotics (non digestible components of food) and synbiotics (combination of pre- and pro-biotics) have emerged. These foods also called as functional foods, nutraceuticals, medi-foods, health foods, etc but are supposed to provide some therapeutic benefit to consumer in addition to the basic nutrition. Dairy foods and ingredients in general and fermented dairy products in particular are well recognized for their nutritional and therapeutic attributes. by the University of Toronto
4-year Dairy Technology degrees (B. Tech and even
B.Sc.) are considered equivalent of Candian 4-year Bachelors degree
in Food Science and Technology. Recently (June, 2007) we heard from
Naresh Dave, an SMC graduate, that the University of Toronto issued
him a certificate of equivalent degree for his B. Sc. (DT) that allows
him to prove educational eligibility (being equivalent to Canadian
B. Sc. Food Sc. & Tech) for jobs throughout Canada. Naresh Dave
also informed us that his degree fetched him a job in under a month
in Canada. That is good news for several aspirants.
